Lessons

The slightly deeper stuff. Reflections, realizations, and things we had to learn the hard way.

So We Celebrate

Prohibition Bar and Lounge.

Calgary, Canada. October 21st, 2025.

We were celebrating the Alaska Highway.

Calgary has a great scene. The food was scrumptious and diverse. The drinks were creative.

We started chatting with two ladies next to us.

Went straight to the real stuff. Like a little liquid courage is known to encourage. Politics. Cancer. Life dreams.

We cried over shared heartaches. Smiled across the table as we gave voice to our relationships. They were colleagues turned friends decades ago. They’ve seen each other through a lot. We feel that, too.

We wished each other well. We hugged and we meant it.

Neighbors.

We Were Here First!

Whitehorse, Canada. September, 2025.

“You guys look happy. White people always look happy,” she said our direction as we walked by.

“We were here first!” she yelled as our eyes widened.

She’s indigenous. And not wrong.

We’re not guiltless. Our actions and mindsets are undoubtedly shaped by, and our lives have benefited from, colonization. Likely in contrast to her life, it’s easy for us to move through the day-to-day without naming that reality. And perhaps that quiet, frequent, forgetting is part of the problem.
